Workshop Disability and HIV-AIDS, Enablement en PHC, 8-9 December 2006


2-day workshop: “People with Disabilities facing the challenge of HIV-AIDS and their sexual rights”

Enablement (Alphen aan den Rijn) and Public Health Consultants (Amsterdam) are pleased to inform you that on the 8th and 9th of December 2006, immediately following the World AIDS day (1th of December) as well as the International Disability day (3th of December) a workshop on Disability and HIV-AIDS is being offered.
 
Prospective participants are:
- policy makers and project staff of NGOs working in the field of development cooperation
- disability and rehabilitation professionals
- disability and AIDS activists
- interested academic staff as well as students from various university faculties
- health professionals
 
Objectives:
1) Participants will leave the workshop/training aware of the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to the impact of HIV and AIDS.
2)  Participants have theoretical arguments - based on applied research – and tools to mainstream disability in HIV AIDS policies, strategies and programs;
3) Participants are able to advocate for equal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for persons with disabilities.

- The situation of HIV-AIDS among disabled people world wide
- Specific risk factors
- Gender issues
- Inclusion of disabled people in mainstream HIV-AIDS programs: why (not)?
- Inclusive HIV-AIDS programming
- Community Based Rehabilitation and HIV-AIDS
- Case studies:
  • HIV/AIDS and the other: exploring stigma in a rural community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa 
  • The role of civil society in HIV AIDS prevention for disabled people, Angola
- HIV/AIDS and workplace education: a critical review of approaches in South Africa
 
Lecturing staff
• Peter Rule of South Africa will be the main facilitator. Peter Rule is an experienced researcher and activist in the field of AIDS and disability, Senior Lecturer, Centre for Adult Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg. 
• Susan Girois of Handicap International (France) and leader of the Africa Campaign on Disability and HIV & AIDS.
• Lydia la Rivière Zijdel, Chair (DCDD) Dutch Coalition on Disability and Development

The courses are conducted under the leadership of Han Kok and Huib Cornielje.
