Webinar & Expert Panel: Fish for Feed or Fish for Food - sustainable aquafeeds?

The goal of this panel-webinar is to bring together academic, private and government actors to reflect on the problem of and solutions for wild fish utilization for aquafeed production, and explore the technical, economic and social obstacles and opportunities for a transition to more sustainable alternatives. The role of governments in facilitating this transition will be discussed after five talks:

1 - Joeri Scholtens (University of Amsterdam): Consequences of India’s fishmeal based shrimp industry for its domestic food and nutritional security.
2 - Arjen Roem (Skretting, Vietnam): Opportunities and limitations to replace fish-meal/oil originating from fisheries with alternative ingredients in aquafeeds.
3 - Mark Verdegem (Wageningen UR): Opportunities and limitations to reduce the need for fishmeal/oil in aquafeeds: changing the seafood production systems.
4 - Simon Bush (Wageningen UR): Governance challenges of incentivizing farmers & industry to transition towards more sustainable feeds, with a focus on certification.
5 - Gerard van Balsfoort (Pelagic Freezer Association): What opportunities and obstacles for marine fisheries to stay away from reduction fisheries?
6 - Discussion on the role of (Dutch) governments.

This session is part of the Final Conference (9&10 Dec 2020) of the 75 research consortia funded by NWO-WOTRO's Global Challenges Program (GCP) and Applied Research Fund (ARF). This webinar builds on six GCP projects that have worked on the nexus between fisheries and aquaculture in various Asian and African contexts.

Background - On 9 and 10 December 2020, NWO-WOTRO and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform organise the final Food & Business Research Conference. The theme of the conference is ‘Scaling Insights for Sustainable Food Systems’. Food & Business Research has focused throughout on a global food system perspective because the global dimension of issues, within and beyond food chains, demands systemic solutions. All research funded through Food & Business Research has been conducted in co-creation with other partners active in the field of food and nutrition security. This is based on the assumption that such partnerships coupled with research uptake strategies would enhance the potential for scaling of insights, findings and innovation.
The conference will take place in The Hague, but participants can also join the conference online.
